Krakow-Lemberg

Next week we set out with Wang Wei and we travel from Krakow, the center of the former Western Galicia to Lemberg/Lwów, the center of the former Eastern Galicia. If you know about any good and inexpensive place where to sleep, or any hidden beauty, not widely known place to visit or a good restaurant to try that you would recommend to us in any of the two cities, we would be very grateful to you.

We will of course give report on the way. Until then let us include here the two photo galleries we have found on a Russian forum, published under the nickname “the Cheshire Cat”. They are beautiful and sensitive photos seeking for the hidden and the personal in the city. In Lwów, as you will see, he had it easier, as erosion does not only open up the physical surfaces of the city, but also everyday life behind the surfaces.

The two details of the map of the main squares of the two cities are taken, quite fittingly, from the Baedeker of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy that I found in the cellar of the Casino of Kőbánya back in the 70s, shortly before the demolition of that important cultural center of my home town. The book is exactly a hundred years old now. The very best guide to the disappeared Galicia.

Buon viaggio.

(e ora cerco di cantare, parafrasando Ray Charles, Odessa on my mind)

Thank you very much! Although this time we are already back, nevertheless I will attentively read it for the next occasion – as Cracow is just some hours away from here, it will come soon –, and will also recommend it on the Hungarian version of the blog.
