The principal reason of John Sigismund’s attack was not the religious difference, which only added a confessional hue to an already embittered conflict. The main point was the tax exemption of the Seklers which existed throughout the Middle Ages, as long as they defended the Eastern borders of the Hungarian kingdom in person, unlike other regions, where only the landlord and a certain number of soldiers – his bandérium, – equipped from the peasants’ taxes, had to go to war on the appeal of the king. This tax of exemption, acceptable in a large kingdom and in face of a constant menace of the Tatar light cavalry from the other side of the Carpathians, became unacceptable in the much smaller Transylvanian principality where the falling-out taxes of about one third of the population were heavily felt. This is why Transylvanian princes, beginning with John Sigismund, make repeated efforts to subdue the Seklers and to constrain them to pay taxes, and this is why the Seklers, throughout all the 16th and 17th century, again and again rise against the princely power (sometimes even joining forces with the state’s enemies, e.g. when in 1599 they fight on the side of the Wallachian Mihai Viteazul against Sigismund Báthory, and kill the defenceless Prince Andreas Báthory at Csíkszentdomonkos). The revolt of Csík in 1567 (and the unsuccessful princely attempt to crush it) was but one of the early events in the long history of this wrangling (which finally ends with the terrible madéfalvi veszedelem in 1764.

In the meantime it comes to my mind that the origins of the csíksomlyói búcsú are even older than 1456: the first surviving papal bull of indulgence and appeal to pilgrimage was conceded in 1444 to the Franciscans of Csíksomlyó, to encourage the contributions of the local population to the construction of their church and convent.Studiolumhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06377777909296284368noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4565845984512808077.post-90830415816152960392012-09-27T11:20:09.123+02:002012-09-27T11:20:09.123+02:00yes, you are right, but i wanted to say, that was ...yes, you are right, but i wanted to say, that was it really the greatest problem for a king, that these fellows were living as catholicals?
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4565845984512808077.post-38871415527823548832012-09-27T10:48:05.462+02:002012-09-27T10:48:05.462+02:00Yes, that’s right, but donʻt forget that the Catho...Yes, that’s right, but donʻt forget that the Catholic Sekler victory over Prince John Sigismund invading Csík only gave an impulse to a cult and pilgrimage already existing in Csíksomlyó since John Hunyadi (or his vassals) founded the Salvator Chapel on the Somlyó hill precisely after the victory of Nándorfehérvár/Belgrade.Studiolumhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06377777909296284368noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4565845984512808077.post-63126331236380889942012-09-27T10:32:00.450+02:002012-09-27T10:32:00.450+02:00:O
