Mr. President

Dmitrij Rybalko: Old legend. Mammoth tooth [sic!] 5×4 cm, 2010

A quiz question. Who is the person simply known to the world as “Mr. President”?

No, not the president of the United States. What is more, not even the leader of Hungary who in these moments is taking over the office of presidency of the European Union for the next six months.

For the solution, copy into the translator program of the world’s most popular site, Google, this phrase: Доброе утро Дмитрий Анатольевич! – Good morning, Dmitry Anatolyevich! Or simply click here. There you go.

But you can also try it with good day, good evening and good night, or even with just a comma put after the name Дмитрий Анатольевич. If You are called Dmitry Anatolyevich, the Google translator will automatically call You Mr. President.

But Google also knows the good manners in another respect. If you want to wish a good morning to Presidents Putin or Medvedev, the program will automatically insert the title “Mr.” before their names, unlike when you want to do the honor to some kind of Tolstoy or Dostoevsky.

And finally the popularity of Mr. President is clearly shown by the fact that his name was also recently used to advertise a much less known brand in the United States.

  1. I can't seem to locate an email address for you, so I'll write a quick note here to tell you that I've just taken the liberty of submitting Poemas del rio Wang to the Weblog ("Bloggies") competition, in the category "best European weblog."

I was submitting TYWKIWDBI for a "best kept secret," so I felt a little less guilty by including some other nominations...

The chance of either of us being a finalist for the actual voting is extremely small, but there's no downside, and it's worth a shot. Finalists are announced February 1.

  2. Dear Stan,

as the wise Latins used to say, in magnis et voluisse sat est, to once have wanted is enough in great deeds, so I’m deeply honored by the mere fact of having been submitted to this competition, and by none less than the paramount Minnesotastan! This in itself is an unexpected prize for me, and whatever more comes will be just a pleasant addition. I thank you really very much for your favor, confidence and kindness.

A private e-mail address is included at the right margin of the blog, under the title “e-mail” in the section “Más de nosotros – More from us”; I do not want to repeat it here for fear of offering it to e-mail address harvesting robots.

    Thanks again and best wishes
    Tamás
