Who can tell us the purpose of these iron/brass objects, which are made visible at the Ukrainian border, during the change of the wide/narrow gauge axis by the railway worker who at midnight, without a word rips up the door of the last coupe of the sleeping-car, folds up the carpet, sweeps away the cover of a mysterious hole, and through it lifts them out just as a surgeon an encapsulated foreign body? Then, two hours later, the same thing in reverse. He only fails to fold back the carpet.

  1. I presume that are spacers that when in place push something out to the wider gauge, and when taken out allow the something to move inward to the narrower gauge. I have no idea what the something is, but they look to thin to be directly part of the axles.

  3. I sent this to a friend who is a railroad enthusiast. He replied that "I think these are the pins that hold the trucks (the assembly the wheels are mounted in) to the frame of the car. My guess is that these allow the narrow gauge trucks to be rolled out so the standard trucks can be fitted; or they may be some type of locking pin to adjust the brake rigging."
