Your analysis made me look again at the original. I note the water wheels and wonder about their purpose. Mills, sawmills, looms, forges, come to mind. Certainly there are a lot of them on the outer bend of the river where maybe the current was faster. I'll now go and see if I can locate it on the old map you published! Interesting how the past can draw you in. Thanks.
